40th Annual Texas History Day - BISD Awards Summary

Sixty-five BISD students took part as writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights, and artists in the 40th Annual online/virtual Texas History Day co-hosted by the Bullock Texas State History Museum and the University of Texas at Austin. This event welcomed students to research topics related to the theme Breaking Barriers in History and presented their own unique expression of history. A total of 985 students, as confirmed by Matthew McConaughey in the opening of the ceremony, participated in this state virtual contest.

Students Itzel Rodriguez, Catalina Serna, Roberto Boreaux, and Dominic Barrera from Stillman Middle School placed 1st in the Junior Division-Group Performance category. Their project titled Mr. Rogers: Breaking Barriers was sponsored by Frances Garcia. Veterans Memorial ECHS students Mathew Montiel, Monserrat Sandoval-Malherbe, Joel SantivaƱez, Andrea Urbina, and Aiden Anzaldua placed second in Group Performance with their entry titled Felix Tijerina: Breaking Barriers by Opening Doors for Latin Americans. Their sponsor was Patty Gonzalez.

Both entries have been certified and will be representing BISD at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Virtual Contest that will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park from June 14-20, 2020.
